Mithila region, the center of ancient civilization is the very ancient region in Nepal. The region covers present districts Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Saptari, Rautahat, Sunsari and Morang in Nepal. The people living in this region are known as Maithili. They speak maithili language. Mithila has always been popular among people all around the world becuase of the Hindu Goddess Sita. Sita is the inspiration of each woman living in Mithila. Maithili women have always been pride of Mithila. But ofcourse the male dominated society of Mithila has never noticed this. Maithili women have great talents in them i.e Mithila Arts and crafts. A maithili woman does a Mithila Art since her childhood. No formal training is given to a maithili girl for Mithila Art.
Every maithili woman who are seen in a position has had a long and distinguished career. In Mithila there was a time when there was a different manner in which boys and girls were treated, particularly regarding education. Still there are many families in remote areas who do not want to invest money in education of their female children. This attitude, attributable in part to cultural beliefs that place a higher value on male children, has still resulting large percentage of girls and women who are uneducated and living in poverty in many place in Mithila.
There have been some good non-governmental organizations like WDSC, Support Nepal who are dedicated to uplifting the social, intellectual and econommic status of Nepali women through literacy and income generating programs. In the same way DHA, JWDC and JHC have been giving trainings related to Mithila Arts and crafts along with employment oppertunities by which maithili women are being able to give better life to their families.
The women in Mithila have great hearts and willing powers. They only need encouragements to overcome any obstacle in their lives. And if worked on their empowerment and awareness they will be an example of symbols of success in under developed countries like Nepal.
